How to Get Started as a Fashion & Editorial Makeup Artist (Even From Scratch)

How to Get Started as a Fashion & Editorial Makeup Artist (Even From Scratch)

Fashion and editorial makeup is something so many makeup artists are drawn to — but it can also feel a little unclear where to actually start.

Do you need more experience first?
Do you need industry connections?
Or do you just… start creating?

If you’ve ever found yourself asking these questions, you’re definitely not alone.

The truth is, fashion makeup often feels like a big step — but in reality, it’s much more accessible than most artists think.

I recently shared a new episode on the Girl Meets Brush Podcast where I break this all down in a really simple, practical way.

In this episode, I talk through how to begin, how to grow, and what actually makes fashion makeup stand out.

What Fashion & Editorial Makeup Actually Is

First of all, let’s simplify what we mean by “fashion makeup.”

Because it’s not just one thing.

Fashion and editorial makeup can include:

• Editorial shoots
• Creative beauty work
• Campaigns
• Runway and fashion shows

What makes it different from everyday makeup is that it’s often about creativity, storytelling and visual impact, rather than just wearability.

It’s about creating something that works for a concept, a shoot or a brief — and that’s where it becomes really exciting.

The Biggest Misconceptions

There are a few things that often hold makeup artists back from stepping into fashion work.

You might think:

“I need to be based in London.”
“I need an agent first.”
“I need years of experience before I can even try.”

But the reality is — most artists don’t get into fashion by being invited into it.

They get into it by creating the work themselves first.

And this is a really important shift.

Because it means you don’t have to wait for an opportunity — you can start building it.

How to Start From Where You Are

If you’re interested in fashion or editorial makeup, the best place to start is with your portfolio.

Your portfolio isn’t just about showing what you can do — it’s about showing where you want to go.

So if you want to move into fashion, your portfolio needs to start reflecting that direction.

That might include:

• Organising creative shoots
• Collaborating with photographers and stylists
• Testing ideas and concepts
• Experimenting with different looks

Some of the strongest fashion portfolios aren’t built on big productions — they’re built on simple, well-thought-out shoots with a clear creative idea.

Working for Free vs Paid Work

This is something that comes up a lot when building a portfolio.

When you’re starting out, collaborations and test shoots are a really valuable way to build your work.

They allow you to:

• create the looks you want
• gain experience
• work with other creatives
• build strong portfolio images

But where it can become tricky is when everything becomes about “exposure” — without real value coming back to you.

A simple way to approach this is to ask yourself:

What am I actually gaining from this?

A good collaboration should give you something clear:

• strong images for your portfolio
• experience
• connections
• or work that genuinely moves your portfolio forward

If it doesn’t — or if you’re repeatedly working for free without growth — it’s okay to start being more selective.

Because your time, your skills and your work all have value.

Why Working to a Brief Changes Everything

One of the biggest shifts I see in makeup artists is when they start working to a brief or concept.

Instead of just creating a look, you’re creating something with:

• direction
• purpose
• intention

And this is often where portfolios start to really grow.

Because the work becomes more focused and more aligned with the kind of opportunities you want.

How to Build a Make-Up Artist Portfolio (That Actually Gets You Booked!)

How to Build a Make-Up Artist Portfolio (That Actually Gets You Booked!)

If you’re wondering how to build a makeup artist portfolio, you’re not alone.

It’s one of the biggest challenges for both beginner and developing MUAs:

  • What should I include?

  • How do I start without clients?

  • How many images do I actually need?

The truth is, every professional makeup artist started exactly where you are now.

And your portfolio? It’s one of the most important tools you’ll ever create.

Your Makeup Artist Portfolio = Your Visual CV

Your makeup portfolio is your visual CV.

It shows potential:

  • clients

  • photographers

  • brands

…your skill level, style and the type of work you want to attract.

For many artists, Instagram now acts as their main online makeup portfolio, so what you share really matters.

The key?

Clarity over Quantity.

What to Include in a Strong Makeup Portfolio

A strong makeup artist portfolio should show both skill and versatility.

Focus on:

  • flawless skin work

  • natural or soft glam makeup

  • bridal makeup looks

  • editorial or creative makeup

  • different skin tones and face shapes

You don’t need hundreds of images.

In fact, 6–10 high-quality looks are often enough to showcase your ability and get you booked.

Client Work vs Creative Makeup

Your portfolio should include a mix of both:

Client work

  • shows real-world results

  • builds trust with potential bookings

Creative work

  • shows your artistry and ideas

  • helps you stand out in a competitive industry

If you want to get noticed as a makeup artist, creative work is often what elevates your portfolio.

How to Build a Makeup Portfolio From Scratch

If you’re starting with no clients, focus on collaboration.

Work with:

  • photographers

  • models

  • stylists

This is one of the fastest ways to build a professional makeup portfolio.

You don’t need a big budget.

Simple shoots with:

  • good lighting

  • strong makeup

  • clear concepts

…can create powerful portfolio images.

Using Awards & Creative Briefs to Build Your Portfolio

If you’re unsure what looks to create, working to a brief can help.

Creative challenges and awards:

  • give you direction

  • push your skills

  • help you build a stronger portfolio faster

That’s exactly why we created the Girl Meets Brush Make-Up Artist Awards

They’re designed to help MUAs:

  • create portfolio-worthy work

  • gain industry recognition

  • and even achieve publication opportunities

Learn How to Build a Makeup Artist Portfolio (With Guidance)

One of the biggest struggles for MUAs is trying to figure everything out alone.

If you want a clear pathway, my signature programme “How to Be a Successful MUA” covers:

  • how to build a makeup portfolio

  • how to attract clients

  • how to grow your visibility as a makeup artist

It’s designed to help you move from learning → to getting booked.

Building a successful makeup artist portfolio takes time—but it always starts with taking that first step.

In this episode, I wanted to break it down in a simple, honest way—because it’s something so many artists feel stuck on at the beginning. Your portfolio doesn’t need to be perfect to start… it just needs to start.

Focus on creating, keep building your skills, and allow your work to evolve as you grow.

How to Grow Your Makeup Career in 2026

How to Grow Your Makeup Career in 2026

The makeup industry has changed a lot over the last decade.

There are more makeup artists entering the industry than ever before, and for many artists it can sometimes feel difficult to know how to move their career forward.

But the interesting thing is that although the industry has become more competitive, there are also more opportunities than ever before for makeup artists who are willing to develop their skills, show their work and actively create opportunities for themselves.

After more than 20 years working as a makeup artist and building Girl Meets Brush, there are a few things I see again and again in artists who successfully grow their careers.

1. The Makeup Industry Is More Open Than Ever

Years ago there were fewer clear paths into the industry.

Today, makeup artists can build careers in many different areas including:

• Bridal makeup
• Editorial and fashion
• Content creation
• Brand collaborations
• Education and training
• Creative artistry

Because of social media and online platforms, artists now have far more ways to showcase their work and build visibility.

2. Stop Waiting To Be Discovered

One of the biggest misconceptions in the makeup industry is that success comes from being discovered.

In reality, many careers grow because artists create their own opportunities.

This might include:

• organising creative photoshoots
• collaborating with photographers or stylists
• entering makeup competitions or awards
• building a strong and diverse portfolio
• consistently sharing work online

These types of opportunities often lead to connections, experience and visibility that can help artists progress.

3. Visibility Is Essential

Talent is important, but visibility plays a huge role in career growth.

If people can’t see your work, they simply don’t know what you are capable of.

Building visibility might involve:

• sharing your work on social media
• building a strong portfolio
• publishing creative projects
• collaborating with other creatives

Over time, this visibility helps build recognition and trust within the industry.

4. Community Makes A Big Difference

Makeup artistry can sometimes feel like a very independent career, but artists often grow much faster when they are part of a supportive environment.

Being around other creatives allows artists to:

• learn from others
• receive feedback
• discover opportunities
• stay motivated and inspired

This is one of the reasons why communities and educational spaces for makeup artists have become so valuable.

Supporting Makeup Artists Through Girl Meets Brush community

At Girl Meets Brush, our aim has always been to support makeup artists in developing their skills, confidence and careers.

Through our online academy, makeup artist awards and artist community, we provide education, opportunities and support for artists at every stage of their journey.

If you're looking for a space where you can continue learning, connect with other artists and access opportunities within the industry, you can explore the Girl Meets Brush MUA Collective.
